Faculty Member, Geography-Anthropology
Osher Chair in the History of Cartography
About
I teach in both Geography-Anthropology and American & New England Studies at USM, where I also contribute to the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education. I am also director of the History of Cartography Project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I am broadly interested in the nature and history of surveying and mapping, particularly in the era 1650-1850, and in Britain and the British North American colonies. These interests require an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses book history, art history, history of science and technology, and literary studies, as well as geography, sociology, and political science.
